HISTORY
The Boston Terrier's direct
forebears are English and
French Bulldogs and the
White English Terrier.
It was developed in the
U.S. only about 150 years
ago as a fighting dog, a
pastime that has since been
outlawed. Although it is still
always ready to scrap with
other dogs, its behavior toward
people is not aggressive.
|
TEMPERAMENT
Playful and very affectionate,
they like to be part of the
family. They are reliable
with children, intelligent,
easy to train and, despite
being relatively small, make
excellent watchdogs
|
DESCRIPTION
Boston Terriers are compact
and well-muscled dogs. Their
faces are unmistakable, with
short, wide muzzles, prominent
eyes set far apart and short,
erect ears. These dogs come
in brindle or black, both with
white markings.
|
GROOMING
The smooth, shorthaired,
fine, glossy coat is easy to
groom. Comb and brush with
a firm bristle brush, and bathe
only when necessary. Wipe
the face with a damp cloth
every day and clean the
prominent eyes carefully.
Check both the ears and eyes
for grass seeds. Ticks may
also lurk in the ears. The
nails should be clipped from
time to time.

EXERCISE & FEEDING
Regular walks or sessions of
free play in a fenced yard are
all Boston Terriers need to
stay in shape. There are no
special feeding requirements.

Boston Terrier
Dog
"American Gentleman
Among Dogs"
The Boston Terrier was originally bred and
developed
in the Boston area. The Boston
Terrier
Club of America
was formed in 1891, and he was finally
admitted to
the AKC
stud book in 1893, the very first native
American
breed to
be recognized. The Boston Terrier
is a
very lively, highly
intelligent, smooth coated , compactly built
dog with
a short
tail. He is sturdy, square in
appearance,
neither spindly
nor coarse. A proportionate
combination
of "Color
and White Markings" is a particularly
distinctive
feature of this breed.
The Boston is a very friendly dog with an
excellent
disposition. He does well in all
kinds
of situations, from a
small dwelling to a large suburban or country
home.
The
Boston Terrier sheds a bit and so should be
groomed
once
a week at least. His daily
exercise needs
are minimal. He
is blessed with intelligence and is highly
trainable.
He is
excellent with children, and bonds to the
whole family.
An American original, and an excellent
companion,
a Boston Terrier puppy is a good choice.
